Heart failure is likely the last thing anyone would suspect to find in a teenager. It was a shock to the Edney family as well. But it was finally an answer to what had been causing 14-year-old Megan Edney so much discomfort for so many years and the reason they unexpectedly found themselves relying on the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte.
“On May 30, 2018, after several rounds of testing and visits to different specialists to try and find the root of her stomach symptoms and vision changes, a CT scan finally revealed that Megan was experiencing heart failure. Only now, she needed a heart transplant in order to survive.
The Edneys were already 30 miles from home at a regional hospital when doctors gave the news that Megan would need to be transferred to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte for the life-saving procedure. The Edneys drove two terrifying hours through torrential rains that day to get to the Charlotte emergency room.
“It is almost impossible to describe the feelings of helplessness,” said Megan’s mother, Lisa. “The concept of leaving her side for a few hours of sleep was unthinkable!”
Having the safe space of Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte so close to Megan’s hospital room, removed a huge weight from the shoulders of Megan’s mom and dad. For 34 days, Mike and Lisa Edney were never more than a couple minutes away from their daughter.
Megan returned to Levine Children’s Hospital several times for follow-up testing and checkups. Her new heart is working perfectly, and thus far there have been no signs of rejection. “Megan has her life back, and you can see it in her eyes! Ronald McDonald House has played a major role in her treatment and recovery and we will be eternally grateful!”
