Bob & emily Lauer

You’ve been volunteering at RMH since October 2016, could you share what brought you into the House for the first time?
Bob - “It was Emily’s idea. She was healing from shoulder surgery, her sister had passed away, and she was ready for something besides her tutoring business. She also knew that RMH was a great place to volunteer through her father, who was a Director for a non-profit.”
You are both so busy volunteering and have each contributed over 800 lifetime hours. We wonder what you like to do for fun when you are not volunteering?
B – “I’m still doing some consulting work, but for fun I like to play tennis, do yoga, Tai-chi and other workout classes.”
Emily – “I like to swim, do yoga and cook. We just got a new stove and my cookies are now perfect! My favorite types of meals to cook are healthy Mediterranean type meal. I’ve liked to paint in the past and I think I really need to take it up again!”
B & E – “We both love the arts and go to plays and any other type of art event!”
Although you each have individual roles within the House you almost always volunteer together, what is the best thing about volunteering as a couple?
B – “It is a shared activity that we can converse about when we get home. We have a built- in support system and know we can always help each other!”
E – “I know I can boss Bob around while we’re volunteering! But we’ve never gotten into a fight while at the House, of course!”
What makes you happiest about volunteering at RMH of Charlotte?
E – “Helping others, talking to people. Everyone seems to want to be here, staff and volunteers. Guests are appreciative of the help.
The hours spent at the House are the best hours we’ve had during the week.”
The RMH of Charlotte’s mission is all about families, I know you have children and grandchildren. I would love it if you could share a little bit about your family.
B – “We have two sons and 4 grandchildren (3 boys and 1 girl). One son is in Baltimore area and one son is in Chicago area. Grand-kids are great, very busy. The Chicago area grand-kids are into hockey and gymnastics. Very sweet nice kids and very good at their hobbies.
E – “The grand-kids call me “Nonna” and Bob, “Bob”.”
What would you tell someone about the House to entice them to volunteer here?
E – “It’s fun, positive pleasurable helping out. There is no judgment and a variety of things to do. Even though we volunteer as a couple, once we get (to the House) we have other tasks they do as individuals.”
What is your dream for the future of the House?
B - “I am excited about the Family Rooms and would like to see one in multiple locations around the Charlotte area.”
Can you share a funny story about one another?
E - “It’s so funny we can’t repeat it, so it will have to remain a mystery for now.”
What’s your favorite kind of music?
E – “Paul McCartney and the Stones!”
B – “I LOVE music and could talk for hours about it. I like classic rock and roll, jazz and blues. I am a member of a club where each member makes a mixed tape and then shares it with the other members. Every so often I will get several tapes from all over the world the members get to critique the music.”
When you are feeling a sense of adventure, what do you do?
E – “We love to try out new restaurants.”
