2020 was nothing like any of us could have ever expected. We’ve each experienced a unique set of challenges and struggles this year. As we head into the holiday season, even knowing that our celebrations will look a little different this year, I can’t help but feel extraordinarily thankful to continue to be surrounded by loved ones. I’m grateful to have my support system alongside me to celebrate the good days and lift me up on the more challenging ones. In the midst of this gratitude, I turn my attention to the families that
are currently staying at the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte and am reminded how much more this House is than four walls and a roof.
Carolina had been in a wheelchair her entire life and was given the chance to have a
surgery that might improve her mobility. But here’s the catch, Carolina and her mother lived
3,000 miles away in Honduras and they would need to travel to Charlotte for this surgery.
Imagine being in their shoes. You’ve never been here before, you don’t speak the language, and you don’t know a single person. For Carolina’s mother, this situation was very real.
The thought of traveling from Honduras to Charlotte, away from friends and family,
was daunting and terrifying. But it was worth taking that leap of faith for a chance for
her daughter to walk for the first time.
Carolina and her mother called the Ronald McDonald House “home” the entire time they were in Charlotte. We eased the stress of travel logistics like where to sleep and eat,
but more than that, we became their support system. Over their 39-night stay, we saw them through Carolina’s spinal surgery, follow-up appointments and countless hours of physical therapy. We celebrated the good days and lifted them up on the more challenging ones. Despite that time of struggle and uncertainty, we still created moments of joy and happiness. That’s what the Ronald McDonald House means to families.
As she prepared to travel home, Carolina wrote a thank you card to the House that said:
“Thank you to the RMH of Charlotte and all the volunteers. Thank you for our room and
giving us a home in Charlotte. Thank you for all my presents, the cookies, the meals, and
the wonderful Christmas; and for so many memories.”
Our community plays such an important role in making our House a “home-away-from-home” for struggling families. For just a $142, YOU can not only help share a night with a family like Carolina’s, but also create more cherished memories like this for our children and families. Please consider making a donation to ensure that we can continue providing a safe haven, a warm meal, a comforting smile and all the cookies you can eat!
Best wishes to you and your family,
